CLARION WRESTLERS TOP EMU 21-12

(Clarion, Pa.): A special Veterans Night Crowd of 1,500 saw Clarion open its NCAA Division I Wrestling season tonight with a 21-12 win over Eastern Michigan.

Clarion won 7 of the 10 bouts wrestled on Friday night at Waldo S. Tippin Gym, a night dedicated to the men and women in the Armed Forces of the USA, who were honored in pre-match ceremonies.

Clarion University=s NCAA Division I Wrestling team is ready to roll out the mats on a new season featuring third year head coach Teague Moore and a young Golden Eagles squad.

The Golden Eagles open their 2008-09 season on Friday, November 21st when Clarion hosts Eastern Michigan at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. Match time for the "Veterans Day Special" is 7pm. All veterans and active military personnel will be admitted free. Kids will be admitted free with a hand colored 8 ½ X 11 American Flag presented at the door.

WHEELING, WV - Aaron Trail's layup with seven seconds left in overtime lifted the Clarion University men's basketball team to a 94-92 win at Wheeling Jesuit Thursday night.

Wheeling Jesuit (0-1) had erased a seven point deficit in the extra period to tie the game at 92, but Clarion called time-out with 10 seconds left and ended up getting the ball to the 5-foot-9 Trail was able to get the ball around Wheeling's 6-foot-9 center Greg Andrews.

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University sophomore middle hitter Nicole Andrusz was named second-team All-PSAC-West Wednesday.

It is the eighth straight season and the 13th time in the last 14 years Clarion has had at least one all-conference player.

CLARION - Four players scored in double figures, but the Clarion University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start dropping a 78-67 decision to visiting Findlay Wednesday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.

Findlay (1-0) raced out to a 22-12 lead seven minutes into the game and actually got the lead up to 18, 57-39, midway through the second half. The Oilers still led by 17, 69-52, with 6:12 to play, but Clarion (2-1) went on a 13-3 run to cut the deficit to seven, 72-65, with 1:18 to play on an unconventional four-point play by Lizzie Suwala.

PARSONS GETS 400TH CAREER WIN

CLARION - Clarion University women's basketball coach Margaret "Gie" Parsons won her 400th career game Sunday evening when the Golden Eagles defeated Alderson-Broaddus 70-50 at Clarion's Tippin Gym in the second day of the Clarion Classic.

"I have to thank all of the players I've had," Parsons said. "This is really a `players' award. Without all the great players I've coached over the years, this won't be possible. I want to say thank you to all of them."

UNION, NJ - Josh Yanke's two free throws with three seconds left gave the Clarion University men's basketball team its first win of the 2008-09 season, 66-65, over the University of Redlands at the Kean Tournament in Union, NJ.

Yankee had grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed jumper by Paul McQueen with three seconds left when he was fouled by Bryan Shwartz. He then hit both charity shots to give Clarion (1-1) the win.

UNION, NJ - A valiant second-half comeback attempt came up short for the Clarion University men's basketball team, as the Golden Eagles dropped a 68-59 decision to Kean University in their season opener at the Kean Tournament Saturday night.

Clarion trailed 40-28 at halftime and 47-28 with 17 minutes to play but closed within three points, 57-54, on a Mike Sherry basket with 4:08 left to play. The Golden Eagles then got the ball back down three but turned it over, and Kean went on a 9-2 run to seal the victory.

CLARION - The Clarion women's basketball celebrated the start of the 2008-09 season with a 72-60 win over visiting Bowie State on the opening day of the two-day Clarion Classic Saturday evening at Tippin Gym.

Katrina Greer came within two points of a career-high with 29 points, while Bethany Koch pumped in a career-high 17 points to lead the Golden Eagle scorers. Lizzie Suwala added a double-double with 11 points and a career-best 14 rebounds, and Sara Pratt had a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with five points, six assists and five blocked shots. With the five blocks, Pratt moves past Heather Cigich (82 career blocks) into third place all-time in Clarion history with 86 career swats.

MEN'S SWIMMERS LOSE TO DUQUESNE 130-100

(CLARION): Clarion University's Men's Swimming and Diving team saw their dual meet record dip to 1-2 on Friday night as the Golden Eagle men lost a 130-100 decision to Duquesne at Clarion's W. S. Tippin Natatorium.

Diver Logan Pearsall was a double winner taking the 3 meter (218.60) and 1 meter (224.47) events.

DUQUESNE DOWNS EAGLE WOMEN 137-100

(CLARION): Clarion's Women's Swimming and Diving team lost its first dual meet of the season when Division I Duquesne topped the Golden Eagles 137-100 at Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium on Friday night. Clarion is now 2-1 this season.

Diver Jena Gardone was a double winner for the Eagles winning the 1 meter (225.15) and 3 meter (246.30) competitions.

SIMMONS, HOGGARD & ROBINSON EARN ALL-PSAC AWARDS

(Clarion, Pa.): The All PSAC-Western Division Football teams were announced today and three Clarion University players were named to the second team.

Honored by the PSAC-West coaches were Defensive Tackle Jimmy Simmons (Sr. Huntland, Tn.), and sophomore wide receivers Jaques Robinson (Pgh - Oliver) and Alfonso Hoggard (Philadelphia - Caravel Adademy). Hoggard was also named second team as a return specialist.

Fans of Clarion University Wrestling can get a sneak preview of the 2008-2009 season on Friday, November 14th, when the Golden Eagles feature their "Blue-Gold" matches to start the year. Bouts begin at 6pm at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.

Approximately 29 matches have been set up with members on this year's team roster, with each wrestler participating in at least two bouts. Two mats will be used until the bouts are completed.

Clarion head basketball coach Ron Righter begins his 21st season directing the Golden Eagle Men's Basketball tradition on Saturday, November 15th at the Kean Tournament. Clarion opens on Saturday at 7pm against host Kean, then plays Redlands (Cal.) on Sunday at 1pm.

Coach Righter has been the master architect of a fabulous 20-year record at Clarion of 328-212 (61%), which includes PSAC-West titles in 1997, 2000 and 2005, plus a PSAC crown in 2001.

CLARION - The Clarion University women's basketball team will be looking to reload with youth when it takes the court for the 2008-2009 season starting at 6 p.m. Saturday vs. Bowie State at the Clarion Classic at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles will then face Alderson-Broaddus at 6 p.m. Sunday on Day Two of the Clarion Classic at Tippin. Action each day starts at 4 p.m. with Edinboro facing Alderson-Broaddus Saturday and Bowie State taking on Edinboro Sunday. Admission to all four games is free.
