TOWNSON, Md. - For the third time in her career Clarion University's Erin Richard (Erie/McDowell) has been named a College Division ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Richard, who was a senior in 2008-2009, is a third-team selection for the second time in three years - she was also a third-team choice in 2007 - after being a member of the second team in 2008. She earns the award by carrying a 3.88 in Elementary Education and earning two All-American awards at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships while qualifying for the NCAA D-II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in two events.

M. Golf. PRINGLE NAMED PSAC "FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR"

(Lock Haven, Pa.): Clarion freshman golfer Ross Pringle (Titusville) was named this week as the PSAC "Freshman of the Year" by a vote of the head coaches in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Pringle had a very strong year posting a scoring average of 75.01, and closed his season with his most impressive performance, a 10th place finish at the 2009 East/Atlantic Super Regional with a 54-hole score of 229. He placed 10th out of 106 golfers. The Super Regional was played at The Resort Course at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia and he shot rounds of 78, 74 and 77.

W. Swimming. MALONEY WINS PSAC SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University junior swimmer Jamie Maloney (York/Dallastown) is the inaugural female winner of the PSAC Sportsmanship Award.

The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and who has demonstrated the values of respect and integrity through a specific action ideally directed toward an opponent. Nominees must also have represented his/her institution in a positive way during competition and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of competition by fostering a good public image.

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University senior tennis player Kassie Leuschel (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic) was named June 17 as a recipient of the 2009 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Spring Academic Top Ten Award.

Lauschel is one of only five female PSAC athletes and 10 PSAC athletes to earn the award, which is voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors recognizing student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom as well in the arena of competition, during the spring competition season.

W. Golf. GRIMM RECEIVES NGCA AWARD

(Coral Springs, Florida): Clarion golfer Ashley Grimm (Sugarloaf/Hazelton) was honored recently by the National Golf Coaches Association with the 2008-09 Kim Moore Spirit Award. The award is given annually (since 2005) to one female golfer in NCAA Divisions I, II and III in honor of the former University of Indianapolis player.

Grimm, a four-year women's basketball standout at Clarion through the spring of 2008, was a graduate assistant in Women's Basketball in 2008-09, and also had one year of eligibility remaining. She walked onto the Clarion University Women's Golf Team this year, a program in its inaugural season of competition, and made a strong contribution both on and off the course. Ashley is the daughter of Richard and Jane Grimm of Sugarloaf, Pa.

Wrestling. HARRISON & IVANCO EARN NWCA HONORS

The NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) has announced its annual NCAA Div. I All-Academic wrestling team for the 2008-09 season and Clarion's Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean/General McLane) and Jay Ivanco (So. Monroeville/Gateway) were named to the squad.

This year's All-Academic Team has 73 individuals representing 45 schools including 51 NCAA Qualifiers, 17 All-Americans, 8 finalists and 5 national champions.

(San Angelo, Texas): Clarion senior track star Erin Richard (Erie - McDowell) finished 12th in the finals of the 5,000 meter run on Saturday night at the NCAA Division II Nationals.

Hosted at Angelo State University, Richard finished 12th with a time of 17:50.94. (Top 8 are All-Americans). The winner was Neely Spence of Shippensburg with a time of 16:35.36.

(BLAINE, WASHINGTON): Clarion's Jared Schmader (So. Cooperstown/Maplewood) bounced back with a final round score of five-over par 76 on Friday at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships, placing him in 45th place overall with a final 72-hole score of 303.

Held at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington, Schmader shot his final round of 76 on the par 71 yard course that measures 6,995 yards. He opened the Division II Nationals with a three-over 74, then a one-under par 70, followed by a twelve-over 83 and finished with today's 76. A total of 106 golfers played in the event that included 20 teams and 5 individual qualifiers from the "Super Regionals".

Track. RICHARD QUALIFIES FOR D-II 5000 FINALS

(San Angelo, Texas): Clarion senior track star Erin Richard (Erie - McDowell) qualified for the finals of the 5,000 meter run on Saturday with her 11th place finish in the preliminaries on Friday night. Junior Molly Smathers (Clarion) meanwhile missed in her bid on Friday night to qualify for the finals on Saturday in the 800 meters.

Hosted at Angelo State University, Richard ran a 5,000 meter qualifying time of 17:27.26 on Friday night and finished in 11th place in the prelims with 12 qualifying for the finals. Sarah Porter of Western Washington is first with a time of 17:15.90.

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Erin Richard finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division II national championships Thursday night at Angelo State University.

Richard ran a time of 37:19.42 missing an All-American finish by a minute.

(BLAINE, WASHINGTON): Clarion's Jared Schmader (So. Cooperstown/Maplewood) had an off day on Thursday at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships, dropping to 41st place in medal play after carding an 83. He has a three-day total of 227.

Held at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington, Schmader shot his round of 83 on the par 71 course that measures 6,995 yards. He was tied for fourth entering today's round after posting a 74 on Tuesday and a one-under par 70 on Wednesday to open the nationals. The Division II Tournament is 72-holes and continues with team and individual champions crowned on Friday. There are a total of 106 golfers playing in the tournament, including 20 teams and other qualified individuals.

He carded a three-over par 74 on Tuesday which has him tied for 4th overall at 144. The Division II Tournament is 72-holes and continues with team and individual champions crowned on Friday. There are a total of 106 golfers playing in the tournament, including 20 teams and other qualified individuals.

FRAN SHOPE GOLF CLASSIC MAY 30TH

(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion University's Third Annual Fran Shope Golf Classic, sponsored by Weinken & Associates and Pepsi, will be held on May 30th at Clarion Oaks Golf Club in Clarion, it was announced by Athletic Director Dave Katis.

The Tournament is named after former Clarion Associate Athletic Director Fran Shope, who passed away on May 2, 2007. The event is designed to raise money to be used strictly for women's athletic scholarships.

Track. RICHARD, SMATHERS TO COMPETE AT NCAA'S

CLARION - Clarion University's Erin Richard and Molly Smathers will represent the Golden Eagles at the 2009 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships starting Thursday at Angelo St. University in San Angelo, Texas.

Richard, a senior, will look to add to her five NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Track All-American awards when she competes in the 10,000-meter run Thursday, and then possibly in the 5,000-meter run which has trials Friday and finals Saturday.
