(SHIPPENSBURG, PA.): Shippensburg fullback John Kuhn ran for 173 yards and 1 td on 33 carries, and teammate Frank Duffy notched a key 32-yard interception return for a touchdown as the Red Raiders edged Clarion 13-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Shippensburg raised its record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the West.
Kuhn thrilled the 3,500 fans at Seth Grove Stadium with his performance on Saturday. He scored the game's first touchdown on a tremendous 11-yard run. He broke a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, and two at the line, then dashed into the endzone giving the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter. Kuhn rushed 5 times for 54 yards in the drive as Shipp went 68 yards in 9 plays.
The game-breaker came late in the first half when Clarion qb
Brad Reifsnyder rolled right and attempted a pass down the right sideline, but Shippensburg linebacker Frank Duffy intercepted the pass at the sideline and sprinted 32-yards for a back-breaking score with only 1:22 left before intermission and a 13-0 halftime advantage.
That lead held up in the second half as Clarion's defense played a strong game and turned away Shippensburg inside the Clarion 10 twice in the second half without scoring, but the Golden Eagle offense was unable to threaten as well.
Shippensburg totaled 303 yards of offense including 211 rushing and 92 passing. Along with Kuhn's 173 rushing yards, qb Rick Henshaw hit on 8 of 18 passes for 92 yards.
Clarion had only 70 yards of offense on the day with 49 rushing and 21 passing.
Marcus Lowe rushed 8 times for 56 yards. The Golden Eagles used three qb's with
Brad Reifsnyder completing 1 of 5 for 8 yards with 1 interception returned for a td,
Frantz Charles was 1 of 2 for 9 yards and
Grant Gourley completed 1 of 4 for 4 yards.
Clarion's defense was led by
Bo Busch with 16 tackles,
Emil Johnson had 13 stops and
Dale McCall notched 11 hits, 2 sacks and 4 tfl's. All-America noseguard
Troy Bowers had 5 stops and 1 tfl raising his PSAC leading season tfl total to 19. He now has 72 career tackles for loss.
The Shippensburg defense was led by Dan Walsh who had 8 stops and 2 tfl's and Gary Dunlap who had 5 tackles, 3 tfl's and a fumble recovery.
Clarion will play at California next Saturday at 7pm, while Shippensburg travels to IUP for a 1:30 start.
