(Clarion, Pa.): The 2011-12 Clarion University NCAA Division I Wrestling season opened on Sunday, November 6 with the Golden Eagles
Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (165-lbs. Sr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and
Quintas McCorkle (285-lbs. Sr. Alexandria, Va.) finished second, while seven other Golden Eagle wrestlers earned top 4 placings at the Clarion – Knight Point Open.
The season opener for the Golden Eagles was also the first action at Clarion for the new wrestling staff – Head coach Matt Dernlan and Assistant Coach
Troy Letters.
Held at the Clarion University Recreation Center, Abdurakhmonov went 4-1 on the day, losing to #4 ranked Brandon Hatchett of Lehigh 4-3 in the finals. The match was tied 2-2 with about 30-seconds left when Hatchett scored a counter takedown, Bekzod escaped immediately but could not score. He defeated Jake Schalles of Navy 12-32 in the semi's.
McCorkle was 3-1 on the day losing to Justin Southwick of Ashland by fall in the finals at 5:59. The score was 0-0 before the fall. McCorkle defeated Colin Campbell of PSU 9-0 in the semi's.
Placing
third on the day were
John Matacic (Fr. North Jackson, Oh.) at 133,
Mark Havers (Fr. Bradford) at 157,
Ryan Darch (So. Battavia, N.Y.) at 174 and
Steven Cressley (Jr. Punxsutawney) at 197. Finishing
fourth were
Trey Hicks (Jr. Amityville, N.Y.) at 125,
Tyler Bedelyon (Lewistown) at 141 and
Alex Thomas (Jr. Seaford, De.) at 197.
Matacic, a true freshman, posted a 3-1 record on the day, posting a 9-5 win over Cody Wheeler for third place.
Havers, another true freshman, finished the day 5-1 overall. He was 1-1 in the championship bracket, but 4-0 in the wrestle backs. He pinned Cody Zechman in 15-seconds to take third place. He had three falls on the day.
Darch, a sophomore, was 4-1 in finishing third at 174-pounds. He defeated Joshua Snook (Maryland) 16-8 in winning his third place bout.
Cressley, a regular 184-pounder, wrestled at 197 and took third place by posting a 4-1 record. He defeated teammate
Alex Thomas for third place, winning by a score of 3-2.
Hicks, a junior, was fourth at 125-pounds with a record of 3-2.
Tyler Bedelyon was fourth with a record of 5-2 and
Alex Thomas was fourth at 197 posting a 3-2 record.
