Bekzod Abdurakhmonov won an individual title at 165-pounds, and
Tyler Bedelyon (141), James Fleming (157), Steven Cressley (184) and Alex Thomas (197) were second in leading the Golden Eagles to a third place finish at the 69
th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championships hosted at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Saturday.
Edinboro won the team title with 163.5 points, Bloomsburg was second with 150, Clarion third with 124 and Lock Haven fourth at 82 . Ten Teams participated in the tournament.
Abdurkhmonov went 3-0 on the day, defeating East Stroudsburg's Thad Frick 12-5 in the finals. Frick had the opening takedown, but Bekzod rallied for an escape and takedown to lead 3-2 after the first period. “Bek” escaped to start the second, and Frick's counter takedown tied the score 4-4. Abdurakhmonov escaped, then scored a double leg takedown to finish ahead 7-4 after two periods. The Clarion senior posted two third period takedowns to finish strong and win 12-5. He defeated Branden Vernali (Mill) by tech. fall 22-7 at 6:22 to open the day and then decisioned Seth Creasy (LH) 12-5 to get to the finals. He upped his season record to 12-2 and is ranked #7 in the latest rankings.
Fleming, ranked #6 in the nation at 157, lost 5-1 in the finals to Bloomsburg #12 ranked Frank Hickman. No score through two periods, although Fleming took all the shots. Fleming started down in the third and escaped to lead 1-0. With a little over a minute left Hickman scored a counter takedown, and then scored a three point near fall with about 40-seconds left when Fleming tried a roll and got caught.
James opened the PSAC's with a fall at 1:05 over Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush (Mill) and also pinned Branden Turner (ES) at 4:53. Fleming is now 9-1 this season.
Bedelyon, seeded fourth, won his opening bout against Simon Rice (Shipp) 10-0, then upset #1 seed Derek Shingara (Bl) 10-3, before losing 12-4 to #18 ranked Mitchell Port of Edinboro. Bedelyon opened with a takedown midway through the period, and Port reversed to end the first tied 2-2. Port scored a second period takedown and then cradled Bedelyon for three back points to take a 7-2 lead and never looked back. Bedelyon is now 7-7 on the season.
Cressley lost to Edinboro's Victor Avery 8-3 in the finals. With the bout tied 2-2, Avery escaped to open the third period and then posted two takedowns to win the bout. Cressley made it to the finals with a 9-3 win over Zac Zelcs (Gannon), A 19-8 win over Tyler Zittle (Shipp) and a 10-4 win in the semi's over Sam Shirey (Bloom) 10-4. He is now 10-5 on the season.
Thomas, ranked #20 in the country, lost a 13-6 decision to #3 ranked Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro in the finals. Honeycutt was ahead 8-3 starting the third and chose down. The Scot tried n inside roll and Thomas put Honeycutt to his back for a two point near fall to draw within 8-5, but Honeycutt closed with a counter takedown to eventually win 13-6. Thomas opened with a fall at 1:15 over Kris Rahn (Gannon) and an impressive 7-2 win over Richard Perry of Bloomsburg. Alex has a season record of 14-7.
Also placing for the Golden Eagles were
Joe Waltko (133) and Quintas McCorkle (285) who were third,
Ryan Darch (174) who was fourth and
Cameron Moran (149) who was fifth.
Waltko was 3-1 in placing third. He defeated MErcyhurst's Kody Young 23-9 for third place. His season record is 9-6.
McCorkle, seeded first, was 3-1 in finishing third. McCorkle lost a 3-1 overtime decision to LH's Harry Turner in the semifinals. He pinnedCharle sGodfrey (Mill) at 4:10 and decisioned Mercyhurst's Fred Hale 3-2 for third. McCorkle, ranked #16 by AWN, is now 14-5 this season.
Darch was 3-2 at the 174-pound weight class. He lost to Mercyhurst's August Mizia in his match for third place 13-7. He is now 8-8 this season.
Moran was 3-2 in placing fifth at 149. He opened with two wins, lost 14-9 to Edinboro's David Haat in the semi's, and lost his next match before winning his fifth place bout against Ethan Swope of Gannon 7-5. He is now 7-7 on the season.
Trey Hicks was 0-2 at 125-pounds.
CLARION NOTES: Abdurakhmonov's win gave Clarion its 112 PSAC Individual champion in school history.
