(CLARION, PA.): Winners of the first Art & Athletics competition were announced on Saturday, December 9 at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium and they are –
Stacey Roy (Sykesville, Pa.) “Best of Show”, Ethan Merritt (San Luis Obispo, Ca.) “2-Dimensional” and Jim Thornton (Clarion, Pa.) “Photography”.
The Art & Athletics Competition was a joint venture sponsored by the Clarion University Athletic Department and the Department of Art.
The competition was open to all artists including faculty, staff and students at Clarion University, along with any member of the Clarion Area community. All framed and two-dimensional art, inspired by Clarion University Athletics, were submitted for judging to Professor James Rose by December 1.
Fifty-seven (57) entries were received and set up for exhibition starting December 6 in Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. Works were viewed and judged by popular vote from December 6 through December 10.
“I consider this a huge success,” said Professor Rose. “We were hoping for around 30 – 40 exhibits – but to have fifty-seven at our first show was really good. We were also very pleased with the turnout and the voting.”
“We are definitely planning to have this event again in the Fall of 2012,” said Clarion Associate A.D.
Wendy Snodgrass. “We are currently looking at dates and will announce them in a few weeks, so artists can begin working on new projects as soon as they can. They can also use Winter and Spring sports teams, as well as those in the Fall as subjects.”
Stacey Roy, a sophomore, Graphic Design major at Clarion University and from nearby Sykesville, Pa., won the “Best of Show” category with her work entitled “Golden Eagle Football”. She won a $200 gift card to the Clarion University Bookstore and is a graduate of Dubois High School.
Ethan Merritt (left), a sophomore diver at Clarion University and also a Graphic Design major, won the Two-Dimensional category for his work entitled ““Modern Volleyball”. A native of San Luis Obispo, California, Ethan won a $50 gift card to the Clarion University Bookstore.
