TOWNSON, Md. – Clarion University's
Hannah Heeter and
Mike Kromka have been named Capital One/College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Second Team Academic All-Americans in women's and men's basketball respectively.
It's the first time both players have been named Academic All-American in basketball, and the second time this school year Heeter has been named an Academic All-American. She was also a second-team Academic All-American in women's volleyball.
Heeter, a sophomore eligibility-wise in basketball and a junior academically, carries a 3.94 GPA in Biology/Pre-med, while Kromka, a junior Mid-level Education/Math major, has a 3.89 GPA and is coming off a 4.0 in the Fall semester.
Both players are their team's leading scorers and rebounders in 2013.
Heeter, the 2012 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, averages 14.3 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game. She is the top rebounder in the PSAC and the third-leading rebounder in NCAA Division II. She also ranks fifth in the PSAC in scoring and is the lone PSAC player and one of only three players in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region averaging a season double-double. She has recorded 12 double-doubles on the year, six 15-rebound games and two 20-rebound contests and has season highs of 24 points and 25 rebounds, which ties for the second-most rebounds in school history and is the second time she has grabbed 25 in a game. Her four career 20-rebound games is the school career record, and her 25 career double-doubles ranks fourth in school history.
Kromka lead's the men's team in scoring at 12.3 points per game and rebounding at 9.0 rebounds per contest and ranks fifth in the PSAC in rebounding. He has six double-doubles on the season and has season highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds (twice), both of which are career highs. He recently recorded his 600
th career point (608 going into Wednesday's game at Lock Haven), and he was six rebounds shy of 500 in his career heading into Wednesday's action.
NOTES – Heeter is the first athlete in school history to earn Academic All-American honors in multiple sports and she is just the fourth athlete in school history to earn multiple Academic All-American honors joining Erin Richard (three in track and cross country), Barbara Buck (two in women's volleyball) and Ellen Borowy (two in women's volleyball) … Heeter is the first women's basketball player in school history to earn Academic All-American honors, while Kromka is the first men's basketball player in school history to earn Academic All-American honors … In all, Clarion has now had 21 CoSIDA Academic All-American winners including 13 women's athletes and eight men's athletes. Six of those 21 have come in the past three years including Heeter's two this year … Going into action Wednesday at Lock Haven, Clarion's women's team was 12-13 overall and 8-11 in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles have secured a PSAC West playoff berth for the first time since 2009 and for the 14
th time in school history. Meanwhile, the men's team was 6-17 overall, 4-15 in the PSAC West.
