38TH EWL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FLEMING 2ND – FRALEY, SHERLOCK & DARCH 3RD -CLARION 4TH AT EWL'S

(Edinboro, Pa.): Clarion senior James Fleming (West Mifflin) medical forfeited for second at 157 and teammates Tyler Fraley (Freehold, N.J.) at 125, Sam Sherlock (So. West Mifflin) at 141 and Ryan Darch (So. Batavia, N.Y.) at 174 finished third to lead Clarion to a fourth place finish at the EWL championships on Saturday.

Hosted at Edinboro's McComb Fieldhouse, Pitt won the team title with 125.5 points, Edinboro was second with 117, Bloomsburg third with 114, Clarion fourth with 93.5, Lock Haven fifth with 88.5 and Cleveland State sixth with 67.5 points.

James Fleming
Fleming, (left) the top seed at 157-pounds, had a bye in the first round and won by injury default over LH's Jacob Kemerer at one second into the match in the semi's. In the finals, Fleming medical forfeited his match, due to an injury. Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman took the individual title. Fleming was technically 1-0 at the EWL's – a medical forfeit does not count as a loss. His lone win pushed Fleming's season record to 30-2 and his career record to 122-18.

Fraley placed third at 125 with a 6-4 decision over Lock Haven's Robert Rehm. Holding a 4-3 lead in the third, Fraley scored a takedown with about a minute left and went on to his 6-4 win. He was 3-1 at EWL's, defeating Pitt's Derrick Nelson 16-1 at 3:58 in the opening round, then lost to CSU's Ben Willeford 6-4 in overtime. He bounced back for a 4-2 win over Bloom's Sean Boylan and then defeated Rehm for third. He finished the season with a record of 17-11.

Sherlock (right) was 2-1 in finishing third at 141-pounds. Sam defeated Bloomsburg's Matt
Sam Sherlock
Rappo 5-3 in the third place match. He scored two, first period takedowns and led 4-2 after the first period.  A third period escape secured his 5-3 win. He defeated Pitt's Travis Shaffer in the wrestle backs by fall at 5:42, but lost to Rappo in his opening EWL match 10-2. Sherlock finishes his first season at Clarion with a 13-11 overall record.

Darch finished third at 174-pounds with a 3-0 win over Edinboro's Patrick Jennings. Darch opened the first period with a takedown and secured riding time for his win. He was 3-1 on the day and moved his season record to 12-16. He opened the EWL's with a 5-0 win over Xavier Dye (CS), lost 5-4 to Chris Smith (Bloom), then came back with a 6-4 win over Travis Moyer (LH) before winning his third place match.

Finishing fourth for the Golden Eagles were Tyler Bedelyon (Jr. Lewistown) at 149, Justin Ortega (Gr. Oxford) at 197 and Phil Catrucco (Sr. Sharpsville) at 285.

Bedelyon was 2-2 on the day and finished his season with a 20-14 record. Tyler lost his bout for third place and a bid to the NCAA's to Bloomsburg's Josh Roosa 5-1. Bedelyon led 1-0 in the second with an esacpe, but a late Roosa takedown put the Husky ahead 2-1. Roosa's takedown with 18-seconds left clichéd the match. Tyler opened with a win by fall over Mac Maldarelli (LH) at 6:43, he lost to top seed Dave Habat (Edinboro) 17-0 at 6:36, pinned Mike Mencini (CS) at 4:53 and lost to Roosa for third.

Ortega was 2-2 at 197-pounds in placing fourth. He lost a 5-1 decision to LH's Phil Sprenkle for third place. Ortega opened the EWL's with a medical forfeit win over Nick Anthony (CS), he lost a 13-5 decision to Richard Perry ( Bloomsburg) and won his wrestle back match 5-2 over Warren Bosch of Edinboro. He finished the season with a record of 20-13.

Catrucco just missed a trip to nationals with his fourth place finish at heavyweight. He lost that bout 6-1 to Riley Shaw of Cleveland State. Catrucco had a 1-0 lead in the second with an escape, but a Shaw takedown gave him a 2-1 late. Shaw escaped in the third and Catrucco tried several moves for a takedown, but yielded one late to lose 6-1. Phil opened with a 4-0 loss to Ernest James (Edinboro), then he bounced back for a 3-2 win over LH's Harry Turner before finishing fourth. Phil finished his season with a record of 18-22.

Finishing fifth for the Golden Eagles was Steven Cressley (Sr. Punxsutawney) at 184, with Joe Waltko (Sr. Allison Park) at 133 and Nick Milano (Jr. Erie) at 165 finishing sixth.

Cressley posted a 5-2 win over Bobby Blankenship (CS) to take fifth place. He was 1-2 on the day losing to Sam Shirey (BL) 4-3 in the opener, and was pinned by Vince Pickett (E) in the consolations. He finished his season with a 10-20 record and his career  with a mark of 56-81.

Waltko finished 6th at EWL's with an 0-3 record. He lost by fall to Cody Wheeler (LH) at 4:44, lost 12-4 to Bloom's Nick Wilcox and then to Wheeler again for fifth place 6-4. Joe finished the season with a record of 12-22 and his career record of 62-58.

Milano was 0-3 at 165-pounds in finishing sixth. He opened with a 13-4 loss to #1 seed Josh Veltre (Bloom), lost by fall to Johnny Greisheimer (Edinboro) at 1:24, and lost 2-1 to Lock Haven's Aaron McKinney for fifth.  He finished the season with a record of 3-21.
