RICHARD ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

TOWNSON, Md. - For the third time in her career Clarion University's Erin Richard (Erie/McDowell) has been named a College Division ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Richard, who was a senior in 2008-2009, is a third-team selection for the second time in three years - she was also a third-team choice in 2007 - after being a member of the second team in 2008. She earns the award by carrying a 3.88 in Elementary Education and earning two All-American awards at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships while qualifying for the NCAA D-II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in two events.

MALONEY WINS PSAC SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University junior swimmer Jamie Maloney (York/Dallastown) is the inaugural female winner of the PSAC Sportsmanship Award.

The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and who has demonstrated the values of respect and integrity through a specific action ideally directed toward an opponent. Nominees must also have represented his/her institution in a positive way during competition and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of competition by fostering a good public image.

CLARION - For the third straight year, Clarion University senior Erin Richard (Erie/McDowell) is a First Team District 2 College Division ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in women's track & field/cross country as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).Richard, who is one of 11 District 2 first-team selection (the college division consists of both Division II and Division III schools), carried a 3.88 GPA in Elementary Education.

RICHARD 12TH IN 5000 FINALS AT D-II NATIONALS

(San Angelo, Texas): Clarion senior track star Erin Richard (Erie - McDowell) finished 12th in the finals of the 5,000 meter run on Saturday night at the NCAA Division II Nationals.

Hosted at Angelo State University, Richard finished 12th with a time of 17:50.94. (Top 8 are All-Americans). The winner was Neely Spence of Shippensburg with a time of 16:35.36.

RICHARD QUALIFIES FOR D-II 5000 FINALS

(San Angelo, Texas): Clarion senior track star Erin Richard (Erie - McDowell) qualified for the finals of the 5,000 meter run on Saturday with her 11th place finish in the preliminaries on Friday night. Junior Molly Smathers (Clarion) meanwhile missed in her bid on Friday night to qualify for the finals on Saturday in the 800 meters.

Hosted at Angelo State University, Richard ran a 5,000 meter qualifying time of 17:27.26 on Friday night and finished in 11th place in the prelims with 12 qualifying for the finals. Sarah Porter of Western Washington is first with a time of 17:15.90.

RICHARD 12TH IN 10,000

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Erin Richard finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division II national championships Thursday night at Angelo State University.

Richard ran a time of 37:19.42 missing an All-American finish by a minute.

RICHARD, SMATHERS TO COMPETE AT NCAA'S

CLARION - Clarion University's Erin Richard and Molly Smathers will represent the Golden Eagles at the 2009 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships starting Thursday at Angelo St. University in San Angelo, Texas.

Richard, a senior, will look to add to her five NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Track All-American awards when she competes in the 10,000-meter run Thursday, and then possibly in the 5,000-meter run which has trials Friday and finals Saturday.

SMATHERS EARNS ALL-PSAC HONORS

MILLERSVILLE - Molly Smathers turned in an All-PSAC performance in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish to help the Clarion University women's track and field team take eighth at the PSAC Championships Saturday at Millersville.

Smathers ran a time of 2:12.00 to better her own school record while hopefully solidifying her chances of making the NCAA Division II National Meet in the event. Her third-place ending helped the Golden Eagles score 21 ½ points for the eighth-place finish.

KRESS, NWOKEDI PLACE AT PSAC'S

MILLERSVILLE - Thanks to a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon by Diane Kress and a sixth-place ending in the shot put by Chinonyelum Nwokedi, the Clarion University women's track and field team scored seven points on day two of the PSAC Track & Field Championships Friday at Millersville.

Kress scored 4,203 points to earn four points with her fifth-place finish in the two-day heptathlon, while Nwokedi threw the shot put 40-2 ¾ to earn three points with her sixth-place finish.

KRESS 7TH IN HEPTATHLON AFTER DAY 1

MILLERSVILLE - Clarion's Diane Kress is in seventh place halfway through the women's heptathlon at the PSAC Track & Field Championships at Millersville after scoring 2,483 points Thursday.

Kress is 57 points back of California's Khyalyani Whitiker in the event which will conclude Saturday.

EAGLES SET FOR PSAC'S

CLARION - An experienced Clarion University women's track and field team will send 12 athletes to the PSAC Championships this weekend at Millersville.

All 12 Golden Eagle athletes have competed previous at either a PSAC Indoor or Outdoor Championship including 10 returning qualifiers from previous outdoor championships.

WHEATLEY 3RD AT PITT. HALF MARATHON

PITTSBURGH - Congratulations to Tasha Wheatley, Clarion University's graduate assistant women's track and field/cross country coach, for her third-place finish among female runners at Sunday's Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Half Marathon which was part of the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.

Wheatley, a 2007 Clarion graduate, ran a time of 1:23.43, which was the fastest time among American born female runners and the 21st fastest time regardless of gender. She finished just under six-and-a-half minutes behind Rahab Ndungu of Kenya and just over five-and-a-half minutes back of Serkalem Abrha of Ethiopia in the women's race.

MALONEY BREAKS 29-YR OLD SCHOOL MARK

LOCK HAVEN - Jamie Maloney broke Clarion's 29-year old record in the 400-meter dash at the Lock Haven Last Chance meet Saturday while in the process improving on her PSAC qualifying time in the event to lead a solid day for the Golden Eagles women's track and field team.

Maloney, who took first place, ran a 58.14 bettering the previous school record of 59.2 set by Penny Gray in 1980. Gray's mark was tied with Taryn Carter's mark in the 100 high hurdles as the oldest standing school record for Clarion.

RICHARD PSAC TOP 10 AWARD WINNER

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University women's track and field standout Erin Richard was named April 28 as a recipient of the 2009 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Winter Academic Top Ten Award.

It is the second time in her career that Richard has been named an Academic Top Ten Award winner, an award that is voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors recognizing student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom as well as in the arena of competition. She is one of only five PSAC female athletes and one of just 10 PSAC athletes honored with the 2009 Winter Academic Top Ten Award.

NICKEL LEADS CLARION EFFORTS AT ST. FRANICS

LORETTO - Lisa Nickel finished third in the 1,500-meter run while breaking her own personal record by six seconds to highlight Clarion's participation at the St. Francis Invitational Saturday afternoon in Loretto.

Nickel ran a time of 4:47.48, and she was joined by three hurdlers, who also had solid days for the Golden Eagles.
