CLARION - Clarion University honored 126 scholar athletes during the "Bob Carlson" Scholar Athlete Luncheon held in the Gemmell Student Complex Multi-Purpose Room, Friday, Feb. 6.

The total represents 38 percent of Clarion University students participating in athletics. Clarion University President Joseph Grunenwald and athletic director Dave Katis were pleased to announce that the cumulative grade point average for all student athletes for the previous two semesters was 3.0.

"We are tremendously proud of the growth and development of our student athletes in their academic performance," said Grunenwald. "Not only has the percentage of honor athletes increased significantly, but overall team quality point averages have also made solid gains. This outcome is consistent with the university's overarching objective of building an athletic program comprised of student athletes who are good students, good athletes, and good people."

"I challenged our student athletes at the beginning of the semester to set a goal to be number one in the PSAC this year in total GPA and the percentage of scholar athletes in the PSAC," said Katis. "Our student athletes took the first step last Fall to achieving one of our goals. The athletic program is in great shape knowing that these student athletes are leading the way."

The luncheon recognizes student athletes for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher; or had two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher; or had two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the spring and fall terms of 2008. Freshmen and transfer students who achieve a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the fall term of 2008 are also eligible for the award. Each athlete achieving this level is asked to bring a faculty member or university individual who has influenced their career to the luncheon.

In his opening remarks Grunenwald said, "This is a wonderful event. It emphasizes students supported by faculty. You are role models for your teammates and each and every one of us here at Clarion University. You remind us why we do the things we do and how important you are to us. We have come a long way from the idea that athletes aren't smart. You are smart and an example to everyone of a good university life."

The women's cross country team, coached by Jason Resch, received the rotating Carlson Cup, named in honor of former Clarion University Athletic Director Bob Carlson, presented to the team that has shown the greatest improvement in grade point average during the last calendar year.

Bill Miller, retired Clarion University swimming coach and a member of the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame, said, "Very few athletes get to play in the Super Bowl like Clairon University's Reggie Wells did last weekend. You are preparing yourselves for the day you walk out of here. You are role models for the rest of your team."

Miller introduced the athletes, who received a certificate from Grunenwald and Katis, and introduced their guest.

Katis introduced Clarion University athletics corporate sponsors in attendance: Rick Himes of the RRRoadhouse, John Habjan and his daughter Pauline of Clarion Microtel, Jim and Lydia Crooks of Crooks Clothing, Lee Krull of Clarion University Bookstore, and Ron Righter of APSCUF.

He also introduced Clarion University dignitaries in attendance: Dr. Brenda Dede, assistant vice president for academic affairs: Dr. James Pesek, dean of the College of Business Administration; Dr. James Groves, dean of the College of Education and Human Services; Dr. Ryan Theroux, director of Academic Services; Rich Herman, Sports Information Director; Dot Allio, Office of Student and University Affairs; and Ken Nellis, athletic fund raiser, Clarion University Foundation Inc.
