SRU SWEEPS CLARION

SLIPPERY ROCK - Clarion finally found some offense Saturday, but it wasn't enough to avoid a being swept by Slippery Rock in a doubleheader for the second straight day at The Rock.

The Golden Eagles dropped Game One 4-3 and Game Two 10-2 to fall to 1-9 on the season, 0-4 in the PSAC-West.

(Slippery Rock): The Clarion University Baseball team opened its 2010 PSAC-West schedule today with a doubleheader loss at Slippery Rock by scores of 15-0 and 6-0 at the Rock's Scritchfield Park.

Clarion's overall record dropped to 1-7 while the Golden Eagles are 0-2 in the PSAC-West. Slippery Rock is now 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC-West. Saturday's games will also be at Scritchfield Park as the regularly scheduled games at Slippery Rock. Today's games were originally scheduled at Clarion, but the field was not playable.

FRIDAY'S GAME WITH SRU MOVED TO SLIPPERY ROCK

CLARION - Clarion's PSAC-West opening doubleheader with Slippery Rock scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Clarion has been moved to 1 p.m. Friday at Slippery Rock head coach Mike Brown announced Thursday.

The Golden Eagles will then travel back to Slippery Rock for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday. Clarion is now scheduled to open its home season Saturday March 27 when it hosts California at 1 p.m.

CLARION SWEPT IN TWINBILL AT UPJ

JOHNSTOWN - The Clarion University baseball team was swept on the road by Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday afternoon at Point Stadium in Johnstown dropping Game One 14-6 and Game Two 8-0.

In the first game, Matt Rossi (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) clubbed a pair of two-run home runs but it wasn't enough for the Golden Eagles (1-5) to overcome a 13-run first inning by Pitt-Johnstown (5-5), which sent 18 men to the plate in the inning while erasing an early 2-0 deficit.

GOLDEN EAGLES FALL ON THE ROAD

FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion put up a 10-spot in the sixth inning on its way to an 18-3 win over Clarion in collegiate baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Francis Marion.

The Golden Eagles (1-3) led 3-0 at the end of a half inning, but Francis Marion scored twice in the second and three times in the third to take the lead before adding two more in the fifth and the 10-spot in the sixth.

CLARION FALLS AT COKER 12-4

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker defeated Clarion 12-4 in collegiate baseball action Monday afternoon at Coker.

Gregg Bandzuh took the loss for the Golden Eagles going five innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on 11 hits while striking out four.

BASEBALL OPENS 2010 IN CAROLINAS

Clarion University's 2010 Baseball team will play 11 games this week as the Golden Eagles begin their season with a Spring Trip through North and South Carolina.

The trip opened with a split against Bloomsburg (W 12-8; L 8-7) in Due West, South Carolina on Sunday, and will finish with a doubleheader at Benedict College on Friday.

"We're really looking forward to the trip and getting some games under our belt," said third year head coach Mike Brown. "We're excited about the new season and about this team, which is really improved over 2009 ".

DUE WEST, S.C. - The Clarion University baseball team split a season-opening doubleheader with Bloomsburg in Due West, S.C., Sunday.

The Golden Eagles won Game One 12-8 before watching Bloomsburg rally to take Game Two 8-7.

CLARION BASEBALL "WINTER CLINIC" JANUARY 31ST

(CLARION, PA.): Clarion third year head baseball coach Mike Brown and the 2010 Clarion University Baseball team will be offering a youth baseball clinic for players ages 8-18 on Sunday, January 31st at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium from 1pm-4pm.

Cost of the clinic is only $35 per player and registration can be accomplished by contacting the Clarion University Baseball office through e-mail (mbrown@clarion.edu), at the baseball office (Room 115 Tippin Gym), or by calling the baseball office at 814-393-1913.

The Mets' superb, young leadoff man, Jose Reyes, has just reached base in the top of the first off the great Randy Johnson, and all Guy Conti ('65), normally the Mets bullpen coach, can think of to tell Reyes is "don't get picked off."

BERKES, ROSSI NAMED ALL-PSAC-WEST

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University utility player Scott Berkes was a first-team All-PSAC-West selection, while first baseman Matt Rossi is a second-team choice in voting by the league's coaches.

Berkes, a freshman from Berwick, played both second base and third base for the Golden Eagles while also pitching in eight games with three starts. He hit a team-best .387 (36-93), which ranks eighth in the PSAC-West, with four doubles, seven RBIs and 12 runs scored. On the mound, he had a 6.50 ERA in 18 innings of work while going 0-3 and recording 15 strikeouts.

FOLTZ'S GRANNY HELPS CLARION SPLIT WITH SRU

CLARION - Clarion split a season-ending doubleheader with visiting Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field winning Game One 8-4 and falling in Game Two 15-2.

In the first game, Clarion trailed 3-0 after inning but erased that deficit in the second when Adam Foltz hit a two-out grand slam that platted Matt White, Scott Berkes and Chad White, who had each singled.

SLIPPERY ROCK - Visiting Clarion was swept in a PSAC-West doubleheader at Slippery Rock's Critchfield Park Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles lost Game One 8-3 and Game Two 15-6.

In Game One, Slippery Rock (33-13, 14-8 PSAC-West) scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-2 lead after two and then tacked on solo runs in the fifth and sixth. Clarion (12-31, 6-16) got two in the second and one in the seventh.

SLATER'S GEM HELPS CLARION SPLIT WITH POINT PARK

PITTSBURGH - Freshman Brandon Slater, making his first career start, tossed a five-hit, one-run gem and Sean Zimmerman scored the eventual winning run on an error in the top of the eighth inning to help Clarion earn a split of a doubleheader at Point Park with a 2-1, eight-inning win in Game Two of the twinbill Wednesday afternoon.

Point Park won Game One 7-6 when it scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.

EAGLES DROP TWO TO MERCYHURST

ERIE - Mercyhurst swept a PSAC-West doubleheader from visiting Clarion Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers won Game One 9-0 and Game Two 7-1.
