CALIPARI ('82) WESTERN PA. HALL INDUCTEE

(Warrendale, Pa.): Clarion congratulates former Golden Eagle basketball player John Calipari ('82) on his induction into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on May 2, 2009 at the Pittsburgh Sheraton North.

Clarion had a contingent of more than 40 representatives in attendance to honor Calipari for his induction including AD Dave Katis, SID Rich Herman, former head coach Joe DeGregorio, Board of Trustees member and former teammate Jeff Szumigale ('83) and former AD Frank Lignelli to name a few.

Coach John Calipari - All of your former coaches, teammates, alumni and friends at Clarion University - Congratulate you and wish you all the best as you begin your tenure as head basketball coach at the University of Kentucky.

John Calipari, a former Golden Eagle basketball standout and 1982 Clarion graduate, agreed to an 8-year contract today worth $31.65 million dollars plus incentives to become Kentucky's 22nd head basketball coach, pending the approval of the UK Board of Trustees. An additional $200,000 buyout was paid to the University of Memphis.

SECOND ANNUAL MEN'S BASKETBALL GOLF SHAMBLE

Clarion University Athletic Director Dave Katis has announced the date for the Second Annual Golf Outing - Fund Raiser for the men's basketball program, namely the Clarion University Men's Basketball Golf Shamble.

The event is designed to raise money to be used strictly for the Men's Basketball program and is being organized and directed by former assistant basketball coach Norb Baschnagel.

CLARION'S CALIPARI LEADS MEMPHIS TO NCAA PLAYOFFS

Coach John Calipari - Your former coaches, teammates, alumni and friends at Clarion University wish you all the best heading to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament starting Thursday, March 19th.

Calipari, a former Golden Eagle basketball standout and 1982 Clarion graduate, is headed back to the "Big Dance" after leading his Memphis Tigers to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament for the sixth time in his nine years at the Tennessee school.

YANKE NAMED 2ND TEAM PSAC-WEST

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University senior Josh Yanke is a second-team all-league PSAC-West men's basketball choice in voting by the league's coaches. It marks the 21st straight season the Golden Eagles have had a member of the All-Conference team.

"We are very happy and proud of Josh," Clarion's 21st year head coach Ron Righter said. "He worked really hard in the gym and in the classroom. He is very deserving of this award."

CLARION PLAYS WELL BUT FALLS AT EDINBORO

EDINBORO - Ron Hollis and Aaron Trail combined to score 43 points but it wasn't enough to help the Clarion University men's basketball team overcome a balanced effort by Edinboro, as the Fighting Scots got an 88-79 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon in Clarion's season finale.

Hollis poured in a season-high 24 points in his last game in a Golden Eagle uniform, while Trail, a freshman, added 19 points. Mike Sherry added 12 for Clarion, and Paul McQueen had 11 off the bench.

LOCK HAVEN BEATS CLARION

LOCK HAVEN - Lock Haven used a 9-1 second-half run open up a tie game and beat Clarion 72-64 in PSAC-West men's basketball action Wednesday night at Lock Haven.

The game was knotted at 47 following a Paul McQueen free throw for Clarion with 9:06 to play. But Lock Haven's Billy Arre scored nine of the game's next 10 points to give the Bald Eagles a 56-48 lead with 7:05 to play.

SLIPPERY ROCK TOPS CLARION IN OVERTIME

CLARION - Slippery Rock outscored Clarion 17-12 in overtime to get a 95-90 win over the Golden Eagles Sunday afternoon at Clarion's Tippin Gym.

The game was tied at 78 at the end of regulation and was still knotted up at 84 with 1:32 left in overtime.

YANKE SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT IN WIN

CLARION - Clarion senior forward Josh Yanke scored his 1,000th career point and poured in 25 points to help Clarion defeat Mercyhurst 69-66 in PSAC-West men's basketball action Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

Yanke, who also added six rebounds, needed eight points coming into the game to reach 1,000 and reached the mark with 14:23 left in the first half. He had gotten his first six points on a pair of 3-pointers. Later in the game, Yanke, who scored 15 points as a freshman at Gannon, scored his 1,000th career point at Clarion. He has 1,017 career tallies including 1,002 at Clarion.

NO. 4 GANNON TOPS CLARION

CLARION - Foul shooting helped No. 4 Gannon topple homestanding Clarion 74-58 in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Knights (19-3 overall, 8-2 PSAC-West), who are also ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, shot 21 of 30 from the free-throw line to help them compensate for the fact that they only outscored Clarion 53-47 from the field. The Golden Eagles were 11 of 15 from the free-throw line.

CLARION FALLS TO CAL

CALIFORNIA - California used a 21-5 run that started just before halftime with a basket and continued at the start of the second half to open up a close game and get a 64-52 win over visiting Clarion in PSAC-West men's basketball action Wednesday at Cal's Hamer Hall.

Clarion (10-12 overall, 1-8 PSAC-West) had cut into a 10-point Vulcan lead in the first half to get within six, 28-22, on a David Blanks 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in the half. But Cal got a basket from Chris Moore with six seconds left in the half to take a 30-22 halftime lead.

IUP HOLDS OFF CLARION

INDIANA - Daryl Webb blocked a Josh Yanke 3-point attempt as time ran out allowing IUP to escape with an 84-81 win over Clarion in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday night at IUP Memorial Field House.

Clarion (10-11, 1-7 PSAC-West) trailed by four, 82-78, when David Blanks hit a 3-pointer from in front of the Golden Eagle bench with eight seconds left to close the gap to one. IUP's Julian Sanders then hit two free throws with five seconds left to put the Crimson Hawks (17-4, 6-2) back up three.

CLARION PICKS UP FIRST PSAC-WEST WIN

CLARION - David Blanks' 3-pointer late in the shot clock with 19 seconds sealed Clarion's first PSAC-West win 66-60 over visiting Lock Haven Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (10-10 overall, 1-6 PSAC-West) led by just three, 63-60, when Blanks came off a screen, took a pass from Ron Hollis and buried the game clinching shot. It gave the senior 15 points for the game off the bench, a big reason why Clarion was able to outscore Lock Haven (3-17, 1-6) 18-2 in bench points.

EDINBORO TOPS CLARION 78-59

CLARION - Edinboro outscored Clarion 40-22 in the paint and 20-8 off turnovers on its way to a 78-59 win over the homestanding Golden Eagles in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday night at Tippin Gym.

Edinboro (14-5 overall, 4-2 PSAC-West) used a 49-25 first-half advantage to take control of the game before Clarion (9-10, 0-6) fought back in the second half outscoring the Fighting Scots 34-29.

LATE RALLY COMES UP SHORT FOR CLARION

ERIE - Trailing at Mercyhurst by double digits with four minutes left, the Clarion University men's basketball team made a late charge to get within five before falling 75-64 to the Lakers in PSAC-West men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

The Golden Eagles trailed 64-53 before cutting the lead to five, 64-59, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Ron Hollis and Mike Sherry with 2:12 to play.
