WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY - Two large second-half run helped the visiting Clarion University men's basketball team down Briarcliffe 85-48 at the Island Garden sports complex on Long Island (NY) Wednesday night.
Clarion (3-4) led by three points - 41-38 - with just under 17 minutes to play but proceeded to go on a 20-1 run fueled by eight points from Damon Gross and six from Lonnell Jones to take a 61-39 lead with just under eight minutes left.
The Golden Eagles then ended the game on a 20-2 run thanks to nine points from New York city native Lamar Richburg to get the 37-point victory.
Ricky Henderson, playing in his first game of the season for Clarion, had a monster night with 14 points and 19 rebounds while adding three blocked shots, three assists and a steal. The 19 boards tie for the second most at Clarion since 1980 (Chris Roosevelt had 20 in 1983), and he is the first Golden Eagle with 19 rebounds since Ryan Wells had 19 in a 69-63 win over Kutztown Jan. 8, 2005. Ten of Henderson's rebounds were on the offensive end.
Henderson had plenty of help, as four Golden Eagles reached double figures and nine Clarion players scored in the game.
Gross and Brent Nelson led Clarion with 15 points each with Gross adding seven rebounds and Nelson going 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. Richburg chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Mike Sherry had nine points. Jones added eight points, four assists and three steals, while Demetrius Graham had eight assists and two steals.
Nikkita Davis recorded a double-double for Briarcliffe (1-4) with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Mike Wood added 13 points. Josh Smith chipped in with 11 points. |
