(BLAINE, WASHINGTON): Clarion's Jared Schmader (So. Cooperstown/Maplewood) fired an opening round three-over par 74 on Tuesday at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships and is currently in 20th place. Held at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington, Schmader shot his round of 74 on the 6,966 yard par 71 course. The Division II Tournament is 72-holes and continues with team and individual champions crowned on Friday. There are a total of 106 golfers playing in the tournament, including 20 teams and other qualified individuals. Schmader opened his round on the 10th hole and shot a three-over 38 on the back nine. He posted a birdie (3) on 13 and a birdie (4) on 14, but had bogeys at 11 and 12 and a triple-bogey 7 on #18. Turning to the front nine Jared shot an even par 36, including a birdie (3) on the fourth hole and a bogey (4) on the fifth, with the rest carded as pars. Leading the medal play is Gene Webster of Cal San Bernardino who had a 1-under par 70, with five players in second at even par 71. Those players include Pat Bauer of Sonoma State, Victor Billskoog of Barry, Steve Cuzzort of Wayne State, Sam Powell of Northeastern and Jonathan Burke of Barton. In the team race, Barry and Sonoma are tied for first with scores of 293, Northeastern State is third at 297, Cal San Bernardino is fourth at 298 and Lynn is fifth with 200. The Top East/Atlantic Region representatives are IUP tied for 13th at 309 and Fayetteville State 16th at 311. Schmader qualified for the NCAA's by placing in a tie for fifth at the East/Atlantic Super Regional, and won a playoff to earn his spot. In 2008 he actually tied for first at the Super Regional, but only 1 individual golfer qualified for nationals then and he lost that bid in a playoff. CLARION NOTES: First year Clarion head coach Marty Rinker is in Blaine, Washington with Schmader... The last Clarion player to get to nationals was Matt Guyton - He was 3-time PSAC "Player of the Year" and a third team All-American in Spring 2003. He placed 7th at the 2003 NCAA-Div. II Nationals with an even par 288 (72, 73, 71, 72). His last year at Clarion was in 2005. |
