THIEL PSAC MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE YEAR

Clarion junior freestyle swimmer Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier/Ligonier Valley), who owns 5 Clarion Men's Swimming records, was named today by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as the "Men's Swimmer of the Year" in a vote by the PSAC head coaches.

"Ryan is extremely deserving of this award," said Clarion head coach Mark VanDyke. "He's a very hard worker and great swimmer who has had three fabulous years of swimming at Clarion. We're proud to have Ryan at Clarion."

CLARION'S THIEL 6-TIME ALL-AMERICAN

(Houston, Texas): Clarion University's men's 400 free relay team of Andrew Claypool (Jr. Kittanning), Matthew Bojalad (Fr. DuBois), Dustin Fedunok (Jr. Gibsonia - Pine Richland) and Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier) placed 12th at nationals on Saturday night and the Golden Eagles were 13th as a team at the NCAA Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Nationals Championships.

Held at the University of Houston's Wellness and Recreation Center, and part of the NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival, the final men's team scores saw Drury win the national title with 543 points, Wayne State was second with 504.5, Missouri S&T was third with 320.5 and Clarion ended 13th with 112.5 points.

PEARSALL 2ND/SIMENS 3RD AT D-II NATIONALS

(Houston, Texas): Clarion University sophomore diver Logan Pearsall (Port Allegany) finished second in 1 Meter Diving and senior Denise Simens (Hollister, Ca.) was third in the 100 breaststroke as Clairon University Swimming and Diving competed in Day three of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships hosted at the University of Houston.

Held at the University of Houston's Wellness and Recreation Center, and part of the NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival, Wayne State leads the men's team scoring with 404.5 points, Drury is second with 368 and Missouri S&T is third with 216. Clarion is in 11th place with 103.5 points.

THIEL 14TH IN 200 FREE/RELAYS PLACE

(Houston, Texas): Clarion University junior swimmer Ryan Thiel (Ligonier) was a three-time All-American on Thursday and Clarion was in 10th place as a team on the second day of the NCAA Division II Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships hosted at the University of Houston.

Held at the University of Houston's Wellness and Recreation Center, and part of the NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival, Wayne State leads the men's team race with 232.5 points, Drury is second with 218 and Limestone is third with 171.5 points. Clarion is in tenth place with 77.5 points.

CLARION'S LOGAN PEARSALL D-II CHAMPION

(Houston, Texas): Clarion University sophomore diver Logan Pearsall (Port Allegany) won the 3-Meter Diving, and Clarion surged to 7th place as a team on the first day of the NCAA Division II Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships hosted at the University of Houston.

Held at the University of Houston's Wellness and Recreation Center, and part of the NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival, Drury leads the men's team scoring with 101 points, Wayne State is second with 98.5 points and Ouachita Baptist third with 78. Clarion is in seventh place after day one with 45 points.

MEN'S SWIM TEAM AT NATIONALS MARCH 11-14

(CLARION, PA): Clarion's Men's Swimming and Diving team is ready for the NCAA Division II National Championships this week and are seeking some All-America performances. The NCAA's will be hosted at the University of Houston's Wellness and Recreation Center from March 11-14 as part of the NCAA D-II Winter Sports Festival. Prelims will start each day at 10:30am with finals starting at 5:30pm.

Clarion ninth year head coach Mark VanDyke is looking forward to the NCAA's, after leading the Eagles to a strong third place finish at the 2009 PSAC Championships.

EAGLE MEN FINISH THIRD AT 51ST PSAC'S

(Mechanicsburg, Pa.): Clarion's Jon Kofmehl (So. Johnstown) won the 200 backstroke on Sunday and the Clarion men swam fast as the Golden Eagles finished third as a team at the 51st PSAC Men's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School.

West Chester won their 11th straight title with 812 points, Shippensburg jumped into second with 544.5 and Clarion third with 504 points. Rounding out the 8 team field were Gannon fourth with 362 points, Bloomsburg fifth with 342.5, IUP sixth with 326, Edinboro seventh at 282 and Kutztown eighth with 177 points.

(Mechanicsburg, Pa.): Clarion's Men's Swimming team continues to hold onto second place with another quality day on Saturday at the 51st PSAC Men's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School.

West Chester leads the championship with 577 points, with Clarion in second plae with 383 and pre-tourney favorite Shippensburg in third place with 355 points. Rounding out the 8 team field are Gannon fourth with 262 points, Indiana fifth with 240, Bloomsburg sixth with 212, Edinboro seventh with 183 and Kutztown eighth with 127.

MEN'S SWIMMERS 2ND AT 51ST PSAC'S

(Mechanicsburg, Pa.): Clarion's Men's Swimming team had a strong day on Friday as the Golden Eagles swam three NCAA Qualifying times and are currently in second place at the 51st PSAC Men's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School.

West Chester leads the championship with 252 points, with Clarion close behind in second with 196 and Shippensburg third with 161. Rounding out the 8 team field are Indiana fourth with 127, Gannon fifth with 116, Edinboro sixth with 100, Bloomsburg seventh at 86 and Kutztown eighth with 54 points.

CLARION AT 51ST MEN'S PSAC'S FEB. 19-22

The 51st Annual PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Men's Swimming Championships will be hosted from Thursday February 19th through Sunday February 22nd at Cumberland Valley High School.

Only one event, the 1000 meter freestyle, will be competed on Thursday at 6:30pm. From Friday through Sunday prelims are set each day at 10am and Finals are slated to start at 6pm on Friday and Saturday and approximately 5:30pm on Sunday. The Women's PSAC Championship will also run at the same time in an alternating event format.

PEARSALL WINS 2 DIVING EVENTS

Clarion University's Men's and Women's Divers had a strong weekend at the Pitt and YSU Invitationals winning 5 of 8 total events under the leadership of 16-time NCAA D-II "Coach of the Year" Dave Hrovat (19th season).

In Men's Diving Logan Pearsall (So. Port Allegany) won both boards at YSU scoring 301.80 on 1 meter and 289.10 on 3 meter. At the Pitt Invite he was a strong second on 1 meter scoring 313.35 points and third on 3 meter with 305.90 points.

CLARION MEN 1-1 AT PITT INVITE

(Pittsburgh, Pa.): Clarion's Men's Swim team traveled to Pittsburgh on Saturday to battle the Panthers and Carnegie Mellon. The Golden Eagles defeated CMU 158-115, but lost to the D-I Panthers by a 216-76 margin.

Leading the way in individual events for Clarion were Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier) and Rich Eckert (Jr. Versailles).

CLARION MEN SWIM PAST IUP 141-58

(Indiana, Pa.): Clarion's Men's Swim team traveled to IUP on Saturday and topped the Crimson Hawks 141-58.

Leading the way in individual events for Clarion was double winner Garet Weston (So. Indiana) who captured the 1000 freestyle (10:17.20) and the 100 butterfly (54.40).

THIEL PSAC "MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK"

(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion Men's Swimming standout Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier/Ligonier Valley) was named as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Swimmer of the week for his outstanding performance last weekend.

Thiel led the Golden Eagles to a 147.5 - 145.50 win over Ashland at Clarion's Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium. He won the 50 freestyle (21.47), 100 free (47.09) and the 200 free (1:42.41) races, then anchored the 400 free relay win, the final event of the meet, which catapulted the Eagles to victory.

EAGLES TOP ASHLAND 147.5 - 145.5

(CLARION, PA): Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier) won three individual events, and the 400 free relay teams took first and third places in the final event as the Clarion University Men's Swimming and Diving Team squeaked out a 147.5 - 145.5 win over visiting Ashland on Saturday afternoon at Tippin Natatorium.

Clarion raised its record on the season to 4-2 in dual meets.
