Feb. 22, 2009 (Mechanicsburg, Pa.): Clarion's Jon Kofmehl (So. Johnstown) won the 200 backstroke on Sunday and the Clarion men swam fast as the Golden Eagles finished third as a team at the 51st PSAC Men's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School. West Chester won their 11th straight title with 812 points, Shippensburg jumped into second with 544.5 and Clarion third with 504 points. Rounding out the 8 team field were Gannon fourth with 362 points, Bloomsburg fifth with 342.5, IUP sixth with 326, Edinboro seventh at 282 and Kutztown eighth with 177 points. Kofmehl won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.23. Clarion's Rich Eckert (Jr. Versailles) was fourth in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of (2:08.34). Ryan Thiel (Jr. Ligonier) swam an NCAA Division II Qualifying time of 45.36 in the 100 freestyle on Sunday. Andrew Claypool (Jr. Kittanning) was 4th in the 100 (46.49), Matthew Bojalad (Fr. DuBois) was 9th (46.71), while Christopher Ellson (Fr. Murrysville) was 11th (47.70) and Robert Schwartz (Fr. Huntington Valley) was fifteenth (48.21). Andrew Soisson (Jr. Mechanicsburg) placed 13th in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:47.98. The final event on Sunday saw the Clarion 400 free relay team of Claypool, Dustin Fedunok (Jr. Gibsonia), Bojalad and Thiel finished second with an NCAA Qualifying time of 3:03.49 to finish the competition. The Golden Eagles, coached by 9th year mentor Mark VanDyke, will participate in the NCAA D-II Championships in Houston, Texas from March 11-14. |
