Dec. 6, 2008 (ERIE, PA.): Clarion University’s Jay Ivanco won the individual PSAC Title at 125, Scott Joseph (174) and Clint Podish (184) finished second and the Golden Eagles finished third as a team at the 66th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championship on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Edinboro crowned seven champions and won the team title with 173.5 team points, Bloomsburg was second with 108 and Clarion third with 101. Rounding out the ten team tournament, Lock Haven was fourth with 90.5, Mercyhurst fifth with 60, Gannon sixth with 59, East Stroudsburg seventh with 54, Kutztown eighth at 46, Shippensburg ninth with 29.5 and Millersville tenth with 23 points.
Clarion’s Ivanco (So. Monroeville/Gateway) defeated Edinboro’s Kyle Kluke 6-4 with a counter takedown with 23-seconds left in overtime to take the crown. Behind 2-1 midway through the first period, Ivanco used a throw-by technique for a go ahead takedown (3-2), then Fluke escaped to tie the bout 3-3 at the end of one. Fluke escaped in the second and Ivanco in the third to set up Ivanco’s overtime takedown.
Jay defeated Matt Yocco (KU) 15-1 in his opening bout and Lock Haven’s Nick Hyatt 3-2 in the semi’s to post a 3-0 day.
“Jay was really on top of his game today,” said Eagle wrestling coach Teague Moore. “The takedown he got to win the match was a great counter move. But more importantly, he dictate the tempo of the match and carried the battle to his opponent. That’s what we want Clarion wrestling to be known for.”
Joseph (Jr. Export) finished second at 174-pounds losing in the finals to Bloomsburg’s Nate Graham 6-3. Joseph opened with a 16-5 major decision over Nick Tetro (ES), pinned Dave Zeek (Kutztown) at 3:57 and decisioned Mercyhurst’s Kevin Hardy 6-2 to get to the finals.
Podish (Fr. Sycamore/Wanyesburg Central) lost in the finals to Edinboro’s #11 ranked Chris Honeycutt 10-3. Podish made it to the finals by pinning Trevor Salvatore (ES) at 1:58, posted an 11-0 major over Jason Foor (ML) and decisioned Jon Hade (Shipp) 4-0.
Also placing for the Golden Eagles were third place Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean) at 157, fourth place Dominic Ross (Sr. Sharon) at 165 and Jamie Luckett (Sr. St. Charles, Mo.) at 197, along with fifth place Greg Lewis (Jr. New Providence) at 149 and Sal Lascari (Sr. Gray) at 141.
Harrison, ranked #17 in the country, had the toughest weight class with top seeded Gregor Gillespie of Edinboro ranked #2 and Bloom’s Matt Moley ranked #11. Harrison won his opening match with an 11-0 major over Brandon Monin of Gannon. He met Moley in the semi’s and lost a 2-1 tie breaker decision. With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, Harrison had a clean single leg on Moley and secured the leg, but Moley eventually broke the hold to send the bout to tie breaker. Moley rode Harrison for 30-seconds, then escaped for the win. He came back and defeated Chris Chambers (KU) 9-4 and Andy Lamancusa 3-2 for third place.
Ross and Luckett were 2-2 to finish fourth, while Lewis was 2-2 to finish fifth. Lascari, who top who was the top seed at 141, won his first two bouts, but lost in the semi’s in the final seconds to Gannon’s A.J. Milanak. He lost his first wrestle ack bout, but won a 10-8 decision over John Paukovits (KU) for fifth.
CLARION NOTES: Ivanco is Clarion third year head coach Teague Moore’s first PSAC individual champion… The last Clarion individual champion was 157- Chris Horning in 2005 along with Frank Edgar (141) that same year… Ivanco is Clarion’s 107 overall PSAC Champion… Edinboro’s 7 individual champions ties the record by Clarion in 1986 and Edinboro in last year’s championship… Top Clarion records, Ivanco is 6-1, Lewis 5-3, Harrison 6-2, Joseph 5-3, Podish 9-5, Luckett 9-3… In terms of improvements, Clarion was third in team scoring last year with 88.5 points – this year Clarion had 101 – and only missed second place Bloom by 7 points… Clarion was 30 points behind Bloom last year.
