PARSONS; TENN.'S SUMMITT HONORED BY WBCA

ST. LOUIS - Clarion University women's basketball head coach Gie Parsons, the winningest coach in school history, and Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in NCAA history, were among 56 WBCA head coaches honored with the Russell Athletic/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Victory Club Award during the National Coach of the Year Award Ceremony in St. Louis April 6.

The event is part of the WBCA National Convention which is held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four.

GREER, KOCH NAMED ALL-PSAC-WEST

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University's Katrina Greer (1st team) and Bethany Koch (2nd team) have been named All-PSAC-West selections in women's basketball in a vote by the league's coaches.

Greer's selection is her third in a row and the second straight season she has been a first-team choice, while Koch earns the honor for the first time in her career.

EAGLES NEARLY PULL UPSET AT CAL

CALIFORNIA - A gallant upset bid by the Clarion University women's basketball team fell short at No. 3 California when Cal's Amber Dubyak blocked a potential game-tying 3-pointer by Lizzie Suwala at the horn to give the Vulcans a 60-57 win over the Golden Eagles Tuesday night at Hamer Hall.

Despite the loss, Clarion (12-16) put a scare into the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region and the No. 3 team in NCAA Division II fighting heavily favored Cal (25-3) tight the entire game.

CLARION SET FOR PSAC PLAYOFFS

CLARION - The Clarion University women's basketball team will travel to California for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday with the Vulcans in the opening round of the PSAC Playoffs. The game can be heard on 91.7 FM in Clarion and on the internet at www.redzonemedia.com.

The Golden Eagles (12-15) are the fourth-seeded from the PSAC-West, while California (24-3) is the top-seed from the PSAC-West having won its first PSAC-West title since 2006. The winner of the game will play the winner of the Kutztown-Millersville game Friday at the site of the highest remaining seed from the PSAC-East.

GOLDEN EAGLES CLINCH PSAC PLAYOFF SPOT

EDINBORO - The Clarion University women's basketball clinched the fourth and final PSAC Playoff spot awarded to the PSAC-West thanks to an 80-65 win at Edinboro and IUP's 72-52 win at Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles victory coupled with the Slippery Rock loss leaves both teams with identical 6-8 PSAC-West records. Clarion wins the tiebreaker, which in this case came down to wins vs. NCAA Division II teams at or above .500.

CLARION KEEPS PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE

LOCK HAVEN - The Clarion University women's basketball team kept its PSAC Playoff hopes alive with an 87-61 win at Lock Haven Wednesday night.

The Golden Eagles' win coupled with a Slippery Rock 76-55 loss to California and a loss by Edinboro leaves Clarion (11-15 overall, 5-8 PSAC-West) in sole possession of fifth place one game behind Slippery Rock for fourth place in the PSAC-West and a ½ game up on Mercyhurst, which plays Thursday against Gannon. The top four teams from the PSAC-West make the PSAC Playoffs. Clarion can clinch a PSAC Playoff berth with a win Saturday at Edinboro, a Slippery Rock loss to IUP Saturday and one loss by Mercyhurst in either of its final two games. It also may be possible for Clarion to clinch a postseason berth with a win and a Slippery Rock loss even if Mercyhurst wins its final two games.

CLARION COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

CLARION - A valiant Clarion University women's basketball team comeback attempt fell just short in a 64-61 loss to visiting Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 26 in the first half and were still down 39-20 at halftime and 46-29 with 15:02 to play.

BALANCED EAGLES KEEP PSAC PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE

CLARION - Five players scored in double figures and a sixth added nine assists, as the Clarion University women's basketball team kept its PSAC Playoff hopes alive with a 75-69 win over visiting Mercyhurst Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

Sara Pratt led Clarion (10-14 overall, 4-7 PSAC-West) with 19 points and 15 rebounds while also blocking two shots. Katrina Greer added 16 points and three assists, Bethany Koch had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Lizzie Suwala had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Freshman Courtney Healy added 11 points, seven rebounds, a blocked shot and two steals, and Shaina Smith set up the offense with a career-high nine assists while adding one point and a blocked shot. The sophomore point guard only turned the ball over twice.

REGIONALLY RANKED GANNON HOLDS OFF CLARION

CLARION - Bethany Koch scored a career-high 24 points on a career-best five 3-pointers but it wasn't enough to help a spirited Clarion University women's basketball team overcome a balanced effort from Gannon, the No. 3 team in the Atlantic Region, who got a 69-63 win over the Golden Eagles Saturday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (9-14 overall, 3-7 PSAC-West) trailed by 13, 46-33, early in the second half but rallied to within one, 50-49, with a 17-3 run that was fueled by three straight 3-pointers from Koch.

CLARION FALLS TO NO. 6 CAL

CALIFORNIA - The California (PA) women's basketball, ranked sixth in the country and first in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, used a 34-8 first-half run to down visiting Clarion 93-52 in PSAC-West action Wednesday night at Cal's Hamer Hall.

The Golden Eagles (9-13 overall, 3-6 PSAC-West) trailed by one, 9-8, in the early going, but Cal (19-3, 8-1) went on the run to build a 43-22 halftime lead.

HEALY NAMED PSAC-W FR. OF WEEK

LOCK HAVEN - For the second straight week, Clarion University freshman Courtney Healy is the PSAC-West Freshman of the Week.

Healy earned the award after helping the Golden Eagles go 1-1 during the week including an 87-76 win over Lock Haven Wednesday.

EAGLES BATTLE #13 IUP TOUGH BEFORE FALLING

INDIANA - The Clarion University women's basketball team played a spirited first-half against one of the top teams in the country before falling at 13th ranked IUP 88-63 Saturday night.

Clarion (9-12 overall, 3-5 PSAC-West) trailed by just a point, 40-39, at halftime thanks in a large part to superb 3-point shooting. The Golden Eagles hit on 7 of 14 treys in the opening 20 minutes tying a season-high for 3-pointers in a half.

LATE RUN LIFTS CLARION PAST LOCK HAVEN

CLARION - A 17-6 run in the final four minutes lifted the Clarion University women's basketball team to an 87-76 win over visiting Lock Haven Wednesday evening at Tippin Gym.

The game was tied at 70 following an old-fashion 3-point play by Lock Haven's Casi Donelan with 4:12 to play, but Bethany Koch answered with an old-fashion 3-point play of her own at the 4:06 mark to give Clarion (9-11 overall, 3-4 PSAC-West) the lead for good.

HEALY NAMED PSAC-WEST FR. OF THE WEEK

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University forward Courtney Healy is the PSAC-West Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the week ending with games Jan. 31.

Healy (Victoria, Australia) averaged 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 61.5 percent from the field (8-for-13) to help lead Clarion to a 2-1 week with a wins over Edinboro and Urbana.

CLARION USES SECOND-HALF RUN TO TOP EDINBORO

CLARION - A 20-3 second-half run keyed an 80-67 Clarion win over visiting Edinboro in PSAC-West women's basketball action Saturday night at Tippin Gym.

Clarion (8-11 overall, 2-4 PSAC-West) trailed 46-45 with just over 11 minutes left but four different Golden Eagles scored during the run including six points from Bethany Koch, five each from Lizzie Suwala and Katrina Greer and four from Sara Pratt to give Clarion a 65-49 lead with 5:58 left.
