Stats

FAIRMONT, WV - For the second straight day, the Clarion University women's basketball team saw a late rally come up just short falling to Fairmont State 82-75 on the second day of the Fairmont State New Year's Classic.

The Golden Eagles (7-3) trailed by 12, 66-54, with 9:35 left but went on a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes to cut the deficit to a single point, 72-71, on a My'Kea Cohill jumper with 2:50 left to play. Clarion, however, could get no closer, and Fairmont State hit 8 of 8 free throws in the final 2:01 to seal the win.

Four Clarion players reached double figures led by 19 points from Cohill on 7 of 16 shooting. Ashley Grimm added 14 points and seven assists and is now one assist shy of tying Shelly Respecki's school record for helpers in a career (470). Katrina Greer chipped in with 13 points, Jessica Albanese had 12 points and seven rebounds and Sara Pratt added eight points and 11 boards.

Danielle Cornish, who scored her 1,000th career point in the game, led Fairmont State (8-1) with 23 points, while Ashley Vavrek added 17. Molly Kiger pitched in with 14 points, and Jaime Merinar had 11.

Clarion, which led 40-39 at halftime, returns to action Saturday at East Stroudsburg (1 p.m.).

NOTES - Both teams shot the lights out from the free-throw line. Clarion was 17 of 18 (94.4 percent) and Fairmont State was 20 of 24 (83.3 percent). It marks the fourth time in the past two seasons that Clarion has missed just one free throw in a game when attempting at least 10 charity shots. It is also the sixth time in the last two years the Golden Eagles have shot 90 percent or better from the foul line in a game. The 94.4 percent from the line is the best at Clarion since the Eagles shot 100 percent (19 of 19) Dec. 20, 2005, at home vs. Millersville.
