INDIANA - IUP scored 42 points off turnovers on its way to a 92-65 win over visiting Clarion in the PSAC-West opener for both teams Wednesday night at IUP's Memorial Field House. The Golden Eagles committed a season-high 35 turnovers in the game while losing their PSAC-West opener for the first time since 2004. Clarion (10-5 overall, 0-1 PSAC-West) trailed by 10, 42-32, at halftime but cut the lead to three, 42-39, in the opening minutes of the second half. IUP (16-1, 1-0), which outscored Clarion 50-26 the rest of the game, used a 19-2 run to build the lead up to 20 points, 61-41, with 12:32 to play. Clarion had one last run in it going on a 10-0 spurt to get within 10, 61-51, with 9:37 left, but the Crimson Hawks answered with a 12-0 run of its own to put the game away. Janelle Zabresky led Clarion with a double-double (14 points, 15 rebounds, while My'Kea Cohill had 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Katrina Greer added 13 points and five rebounds. Jahzinga Tracey led all scorers with 26 points for IUP while adding 14 rebounds, four assists, six steals and a blocked shots. Kylie Miller added 14 points and Kierstin Filla and Hillary Shope 12 each for the Crimson Hawks, who have won seven in a row. Clarion returns to action Saturday at California (3 p.m.). NOTES - Clarion senior point guard Ashley Grimm had four assists in the game giving her 500 in her career. She is the first Golden Eagles to reach 500 helpers ... Clarion hit its first free throw of the game running its consecutive free throws made streak to 24 before Grimm missed on the Golden Eagles second charity shot of the contest ... The 92 points allowed were a season high for Clarion, which last surrendered 90 points in a 92-68 loss to Fort Lewis in 2004-2005, the last time the Golden Eagles qualified for the NCAA Playoffs. |
