Nancy Smoose, a talented and proven high school softball coach, begins her third season at Clarion University. Smoose came to Clarion from nearby Brookville High School where she was the athletic director from 2001-2006 and the assistant athletic director from 1999-2001. Prior to becoming the assistant athletic director, Smoose coached softball for Brookville from 1987-98 guiding the Lady Raiders to District 9 Class AA titles in 1996 and 1998. She was named the Tri-County Sunday/DuBois Courier-Express Coach of the Year in 1995. Nancy Jo finished her high school coaching career with a 124-122 (.504) career record. Smoose taught Health and Physical Education at Brookville from 1981-2001 and was Dean of Students during the 1999-2000 school year. She was also the head girls' volleyball coach at Brookville from 1984-89 while assisting in girls' basketball (1978-79), junior high girls' basketball (1979-83) and boys' and girls' swimming (1993-95).
Nancy started her teaching career at Grove City Area School District and taught Health and Physical Education from 1970-75. During that time she was the head girls' basketball coach and head girls' track and field coach at Grove City.
Smoose has also been very active in the local sports scene in Brookville and played an instrumental role in helping to start the Brookville Little League softball program in 1989.
A native Canton, Ohio, Smoose graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1965 and played basketball in high school. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock in 1970. While at Slippery Rock, she was a member of the school's tennis team. Also, while in college, Nancy Jo played on a local fast-pitch softball team that barnstormed across the Midwest.
