FLORENCE, SC - The Clarion University softball team opened its 2008 season by splitting a pair of games at the Patriot Invitational in Florence, SC, Saturday.

The Golden Eagles started the season with a bang beating Queens (NC) 2-1 behind four strikeout from winning pitcher Caitlin Lamison and a home run by freshman Carlie Cook.

In the nightcap, Clarion (1-1) lost 9-0 to Mercyhurst. Valarie Rankin took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Clarion returns to action Sunday with three games. The Golden Eagles face Fairmont State, Chowan and UNC-Pembroke. The Chowan and UNC-Pembroke games were postponed from Friday night.
