Clarion University senior setter Kristi Fiorillo (Meadville/Meadville) was named third-team ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Wednesday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Fiorillo, who averaged 12.69 assists per game this season (1st in the PSAC, 19th in the nation), carries a 3.93 GPA in Elementary Education. A first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection this year, she is also a Clarion and PSAC "Scholar-Athlete". This season, Fiorillo added 350 digs (3.12 per game), 38 service aces, 38 kills and 20 blocks and was an All-PSAC-West second-team selection after helping Clarion to a 28-6 overall record, a 7-3 PSAC-West mark, a second-place finish in the PSAC and an NCAA Division II playoff berth. She finished her career ranked sixth in school history in assists with 2,852 in just two seasons as the starting setter, and her 842 career digs rank in the Top 20 in school history as well. GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES - The NCAA playoff berth was Clarion's second straight and fifth in the past six seasons ... The Golden Eagles beat Lees-McRae 3-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament for the school's first NCAA playoff win in volleyball ... The second-place PSAC finish was Clarion's highest since taking second in 1989, and the 28 wins were the third most in school history ... Fiorillo is the daughter of Mike and Cindy Fiorillo.
The Academic All-America program annually honors over 1,600 student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through a voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Since the programs' inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter of key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director ...
